La Fortuna and Monteverde are two of the most popular stops on any Costa Rica itinerary, and they are often visited one after the other. One gives you a perfectly shaped volcano and hot springs, the other a misty cloud forest full of hanging bridges and hummingbirds. Together, they make a combination that is hard to beat.
There is just one small catch. Looking at the map, the two towns seem very close. In reality, there is a big, beautiful lake between them, and getting from one to the other takes a bit of planning. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Here’s everything you need to know about this legendary route.
As the bird flies, La Fortuna and Monteverde are not far apart at all. But there is no direct road between them. Lake Arenal, the largest lake in the country, sits right in the middle, and the mountains around it don’t make things any easier.
That leaves you with two main options: drive all the way around the lake, or cross it by boat. Both have their charm, and both have their trade-offs.

This is the route most travelers take, and honestly, it’s one of the prettiest drives in Costa Rica. The road follows the northern shore of the lake, winding through rolling green hills, small villages, and forest. On a clear day, Arenal Volcano watches over you in the rearview mirror for a good part of the journey.

Not to Do! Don’t underestimate the last part of the drive. The road up to Monteverde is steep, curvy, and bumpy in places. It is completely doable, but it’s not the kind of road you want to tackle for the first time at night or in heavy rain. If you are driving yourself, leave La Fortuna early.
The other popular way is the so-called “jeep-boat-jeep” (or taxi-boat-taxi). A vehicle takes you from La Fortuna to the lake, a boat carries you across the water, and another vehicle drives you up to Monteverde on the other side.
It is a fun little adventure, especially if the weather is nice. The boat ride offers great views of the volcano from the water, and it can shave a bit of time off the journey.
However, it also means switching vehicles twice, carrying your luggage on and off a boat, and depending on shared schedules. For families with small kids or travelers with a lot of luggage, it can quickly become more tiring than exciting.

Arriving in Monteverde feels like entering a different world. The air is cooler, the forest is wrapped in clouds, and everything seems to move at a slower, calmer pace. Two nights is a good minimum here, so you can enjoy it without rushing.

From Monteverde, most travelers either head toward the beaches of Guanacaste or finish their trip and fly home.
