Monteverde rewards those who take their time, so we always recommend staying at least two nights. Start with the place that made the area famous, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve. Its well-kept trails lead you through moss-draped trees, past crystal-clear streams, and into a forest filled with birdsong. Keep your eyes open for the resplendent quetzal, one of the most beautiful birds in the Americas, with its shimmering green feathers and long tail. The nearby Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve is a little quieter and sits at a higher elevation, making it a wonderful alternative or addition to your plans.
If you would like to see the forest from a completely different angle, head to the hanging bridges, where you can walk at the level of the treetops and get close to orchids, bromeliads, and birds you would never notice from the ground. For an extra dose of adrenaline, Monteverde is known for some of the longest zipline cables in the country, letting you fly over the canopy and across deep valleys.
